Transforming Our Once Neglected Land: The Final Year To Change Everything | Irish Farmhouse DIY
Can we finally reclaim this land from the relentless Irish rain and years of neglect? Welcome back to our Irish farmhouse renovation and homesteading journey. This week, we are racing against the end of February deadline to manage our overgrown boundaries.
Between broken chainsaws and saturated soil, the "Emerald Isle" is living up to its reputation. We’re tackling land management the permaculture way, creating dead hedges, keeping rotting logs and doing what we can to keep nature as it currently is.
🛠️ In This Episode:
The Battle with the Mud: Our apple trees are literally falling over due to the saturated ground. We discuss the urgent need for DIY drainage solutions and how we’re identifying the best spots for our polytunnel based on land observation.
Permaculture & Wildlife: Watch as we build a dead hedge to bridge gaps in our boundaries. This method provides instant privacy and security for our dog, Vinnie, while creating a massive win for local biodiversity, the robins are already moving in!
Chainsaw Chaos & Community: A huge shoutout to Tom from Elphin Homestead for helping us get our gear back in action. Homesteading in Ireland is all about community, and we couldn't have cleared this section without a working saw.
Winter Land Management: We’re clearing the "jungle" in the ditch, removing invasive ivy and removing leaning trees, and prepping the ground before the spring nesting season begins.
3 Years of Transformation: Stick around for a special look back at how this neglected land looked in 2024 vs. now. The progress is a reminder that even the most "wild" site can be turned into a productive homestead with enough grit.
A HUGE thank you to Tom from https://www.youtube.com/@UCnWua0wsY_uM-8tTz8gz3eQ for sorting the chainsaw, it was lovely to meet both you and Marie.
🐦 CHECK OUT THE BIRDFY CAMERA BIRD FEEDER: A huge thank you to @birdfy_by_netvue for sending us this feeder and the besting box!
