Another month of building my log house is behind me. Now that the back gable is fully closed and the windows are installed, the place feels much cozier.
Not far from my cabin, a strong wind knocked down an aspen tree. I decided to split it into wooden shingles for cladding the facade. It was my first time doing this, and since I didn’t have the right tools, I ended up making my own.
Splitting shingles by hand is a labor-intensive process, but I quickly got the hang of it. The shingles turned out uneven at first, so I built a shaving horse — a traditional woodworking bench that combines a seat and a vise. Using it together with a drawknife, I was able to shape the shingles properly.
I really like how the shingle cladding turned out, and now I’m considering covering the front gable of the house with shingles as well. But for now, I’ll focus on cleaning the log walls from the remaining bark and the darkened spots.

Thank you for watching, and see you soon!
